Orange County Birth Photography : Baby S is born

05.06.14

Doula Karrie Nesbit (Birth, Inc.) was incredible.

Alas, it had been too long... and it was time to head to the hospital so momma could rest up a bit.

Sheer joy.

Birth Photography : One Year Later {On the day Beck was born}

04.03.12

Sometimes (well, it seems like most times) the pictures I create and the stories I document don't get to be shared to the big world. Clients get to see them of course but other work, clients, order fulfillment, family, life, seeps in and poof... time has escaped me. So, time passes and I start to feel like I can't share them anymore... like because they are covered in a few cob webs their story is no longer worth telling. Then, I take a look at the set and realize that I good story is always worth telling (or showing in this forum).

Such was the case with this selection of photographs. This is the story of my friends, Mimi and Gabe, and the birth of their second child, Beckett. He was born a year ago this week (where does the time go?). I figured what better way to celebrate his birthday than by celebrating the day of his actual birth. So, I dusted off the images, compiled them and have presented them here for you (and MImi and Gabe, of course). ;)

In this birth story you won't see a delivery... because... well, Beck got to come out the "easy" way (well, at least easier for him)-- via a c-section. That being said, he did come early... quite a bit early... which is never a positive thing. So, though we all "knew" things would be okay... you never really know, do you? The moments before a little one first makes their mark on the world are exciting, frightening, funny, scary, uncomfortable (to say the least!), and grounding, too. There are so many emotions and a swirl of energy that surrounds the entire event and ultimate introduction into our lives.

Every experience is different. My babies both came naturally and I had the good fortune to be able to hold them immediately after they were born (well, they were cleaned up a bit first). Mimi had to wait... an agonizing wait... since Beckett had to go to NICU. In fact, we all were able to see him before Mimi did... which was hardly fair. I know this was excruciating for her and very lonely. That time between delivering him and holding him (which I believe was about 1 hour) was a vacuum- filled with the empty space left in her belly, the sheer longing to hold and see her new baby, the knowledge of all of the craziness that was coming, all mixed with the hormonal see-saw that every mom who's given birth gets to ride. That little person that was previously connected to her by her own tissue was now more than a floor away.

The birth day is also filled with family, excitement, concern and love, not to mention with amazing nurses and doctors. All in all, it is an amazing and joyous experience... one that can only be truly appreciated in hindsight. I feel honored and blessed to have been there that night... er... morning and I'm so excited to watch this little guy and his brother grow up right along side our two little ones.

By the way, Beck is now a healthy, happy, crawling, standing, munching baby boy (and almost toddler). Family and 1st year pictures are coming in the weeks ahead. On to the story...

Oh Gabe...

That blankie... (see Gabe below) has traveled (literally) everywhere with Mimi. ;)
